Barry Dodd was a great bloke and his death is a tragedy. Not only for his wife Frances but for the whole of Yorkshire. Yesterday I cried every time anyone mentioned his name to me.

Barry Dodd OBE

Barry was Chairman of Connect Yorkshire for 7 years and appointed me as CEO. He was hugely supportive of what we are doing and was the principal speaker at our last Summit in November 2017. And he was one of our most popular Entrepreneurs in Residence, being frequently asked for a mentoring session by our members.

On the wall in the office of Connect Yorkshire is the following:

“We are doing an important job because we are helping the most important people in the world, namely those who create and build businesses. Without them there would be no jobs and no taxes to support the NHS, police and the rest of the public sector.”

And Barry Dodd was a shining example. He started GSM with a colleague some 35 years ago and it now turns over £60m with operations in the UK, Germany and Mexico employing hundreds of people both in the UK and abroad.

If anyone could have become mayor of Yorkshire, Barry could. He would have knocked the heads of those local politicians together. But he was already doing many unpaid jobs, such as Lord Lieutenant of North Yorkshire, recent Chairman of the local LEP, supporting boy scouts and so it goes on

He will be greatly missed at Connect Yorkshire.
