Connect Yorkshire Sponsor and Barnsley-based Black Kat HR is celebrating six years of helping small and growing businesses across Yorkshire and beyond.

Kat Derbyshire got the inspiration for starting her specialist HR consultancy when she spotted an opportunity to help business owners who didn’t have the budget for a ‘HR army’ like larger organisations.

Kat says: “I realised I could help them to get things right, and get things done, when it comes to being an employer by using my skills and knowledge.

“Many business owners tell me how daunting it is when they decide the time is right to take on employees and grow a team because this is not an area they feel confident in.”

She explains: “I’m a natural helper, and found myself drawn to working with small- and medium-sized businesses. When it comes to dealing with employees, smaller businesses are working within exactly the same employment laws as bigger corporates – but without the same level of support.

“Many owners of smaller businesses worry about the gaps in their knowledge. So, I’ve made it my mission to give them the help and support they need to be great employers.”

Black Kat HR, based at the Digital Media Centre in Barnsley, helps with everything from outsourced HR Manager services to support for specific projects on demand. These include handling investigations, disciplinaries, grievances, redundancy consultations and appeals.

Kat adds: “I’m really excited to be celebrating six years of Black Kat HR this month. By providing HR services to over 120 businesses so far, I feel I’ve been able to make a difference. The best part is receiving feedback from clients who tell me they don’t know what they’d do without me. That really makes it all worthwhile.

“They tell me that I make the complex simple, helping them to understand what needs to be done in straightforward terms. And they get peace of mind knowing that the HR side of their business is being taken care of.

“Whether they have three employees or 100 employees on multiple sites, I pride myself in personally supporting them by being their single point of contact. I get to know them, their business, and how they like to work. There are no call centres here, just a personal and supportive service.”

To celebrate six years in business, Kat has added a birthday twist to her usual Black Kat HR logo, featuring a black cat with party hat, birthday cake – and candle!
